school age boy room wants "military" theme

Anonymous
ugh. When asked what color paint he wants? "Camoflage." When asked what kind of bedspread we could get? "Rockets and bombs."

I obviously am not wildly enthusiastic to turn his room into the set from M*A*S*H. But I can't help but feel that I want to incorporate some balance of his ideas. I was wondering about a plane theme, maybe with some aspect of the air force so he doesn't feel it's "too baby." Maybe a poster of a plane flying over, like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Air_Force#/media/File:First_F-35_Lightning_Arrives_at_Eglin_AFB_Florida.jpg

A model airplane from ceiling?

Picking up colors from poster in bed spread?

Light blue (sky) walls?

Any other thoughts? I want to balance his interests with a room that is appealing to me too...

How old is the child?

Olive green walls and get some neat pillows that are camo/deer/military themed. Get some awesome accesories. What about campaign furniture? I always think it looks military like and it's cute and in style.

DH's office is WW2 themed and in no way does it look like something from MASH. We have his grandpa's WW2 uniform framed, a map of the world and lots of WW2 accessories like shells, trunks, hats, etc. We also have some photographs that DH picked out (aerials from bomber planes, etc). The walls are navy and we had the curtains made out of gray velvet.

You could also get prints at either of the air and space museums.

Camouflage is way different than blue. A pretty plane is very different than rockets and bombs. I can understand not wanting a military room, but don't do something that isn't in line with what he wants. You can keep it more neutral - tan wall, hunter green bedspread. It doesn't scream military but it's not so far from what he wants.

Different branches and for different deployments use different camo colors. You can get blue camo. I wouldn't do bombs but they could get airplanes that carry bombs.

No, you really want to control him. Can't you just let him have what he wants and stop being such a domineering freak?

Yes, they do. But when a boy says "camo" he's not usually thinking of blue camo. Blue camo is the least used. Army is light green camo, all the time. Marines have a dark green camo and a tan desert camo. Navy is the same pattern as the Matines but dark blue. Navy often wears Marine style green or desert camo when deployed but not on ship. Air Force has the same light green color as Army, but different pattern. So three out of 4 are green/tan.

A lot of people in the Navy really don't like the blue camo, so I wouldn't do that. It sounds like he wants Army type stuff. I think tan walls and a camo bedspread sound fun and it would be easy to change the theme when he wants something different. Pictures or models of tanks would work, too. Who knows? Maybe he'll want to go to West Point when he's old enough.

wow. People are so quick to respond in the most insulting way possible.

All great ideas! Tan walls with camo or olive bedspread if he wants the ground-based look. Navy and gray if he leans more Navy in his military interests.

You can pick up maps or other posters or prints fairly cheaply at flea markets or even online. A framed American flag would also be appropriate. I went to art.com just now and typed in "military" and got 37.000 hits, so you could certainly narrow from there. Military maps gave only a few hundred hits, for example. And they are having a 40% off sale today.

Is there a particular time period or military service that interests him? Find a hardcover coffee-table type book of military history or photography that you can stack on a top shelf potentially with a model plane or tank or something on top.

It can be creative and not GI Joe.

A lot of military recruiters will give you posters for free.

I think the only domineering freak is you.

OP's house, OP pays the bills. I just did a quick pinterest search and saw some good ideas. I also like the idea of using a trunk either for storage or as a nightstand.

I wouldn't allow that. I vehemently don't support the military and would not be comfortable having a military themed room in any home I live in.

If my son wanted a less babyish room that would be fine and I'd be happy to change the decor. But not to military, and not to anything that promotes violence.

Rockets and space? Sure. Airplanes? Sure. Olive green and light blue colors? Sure. But I can't do military. So I'd say no.
