We're thinking of going to either Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills in August for our family vacation (kids will be 3 1/2 and 1 then). Any recommendations on places to stay and things to do? I'm overwhelmed by the rental listings.
Thanks! |

Here's a co-worker's house in Kitty Hawk. Beautiful new home, and priced great. Accepts dogs. We go to OBX every summer the last week of August-we usually stay in Corolla. Really, anywhere at OBX makes for a great vacation! Corolla is a newer developed area. I've heard that there's a new Harris Teeter's in Kitty Hawk. |
Personally, I dislike Kitty Hawk - it is really built up and cheesy. I prefer Duck and Corolla. |
If I were you, I would skip Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills and either go north to Duck/Corolla or south to Salvo-Waves-Avon.
Going north or south will get you a much quieter time away from the heavy traffic. Pick a reputable rental agency and peruse their listings via search criteria for a house. Your agency should let you limit the search to, say, three bedrooms and hot tub or pool, for instance. If it doesn't, look for an agency that does. You can also specify on the ocean, one back, or two back etc etc etc. In Corolla, there is no real access to beaches except what comes with the house. In Avon/Salvo, plenty of miles of open beach with public access. The listings should have photos of the houses. Photos don't lie, but they don't tell the whole story. The reputable agencies get on the case of the owners to keep things in working order. Reputable agencies will also immediately replace stuff like broken toasters if you arrive and find something like that. Here is a reputable agency. Hatteras Realty. They work the Salvo-Avon area. I've rented from them and they are very good. I've heard Outer Banks Realty is all right. Surf or Sound realty could do better than they do. |
Duck and Corolla are for snobs. |
What if you were looking for a balance of quiet beaches but access to activities/restaurants/shopping if you wanted variety? Where would you stay? I am concerned PP saying in Corolla beach access only if you have a home on the beach. I dont think our budget will get that... |
In Corolla the beach access can go with the development, not always the particular home. So the beach may be down the road. I thik the other poster means there are no public access beaches.
We've stayed in Corolla several times. We are neither wealthy nor snobby. We just like that it's quiet and noncommercial. It's great for families with small children. |
I think Duck will give you a nice mix of both beach and restaurants but it's not that built up like Kitty Hawk. |
