What is a good laptop computer?

My laptop is dying and I need a new one. What are decent brands these days? It's been 5 years since I bought one, so I'm clueless. I don't need anything fancy, just reliable.

my boss, who runs a fairly computer dependent business out of her home, swears by her Dells. She also loves her Apples for personal use, but needs a PC laptop for a couple of her big clients. She runs her Dell and her Apple Macbook side by side pretty much all day long.

OP here. Thanks. I've got a Dell right now and have been pretty happy with it. I just didn't know if they were still a good buy.

previous poster again - we actually BOTH got brand new Dells within the past half year. My boss's old Inspiron was still working, but her sister/CFO decided to upgrade both of their computers when hers crashed and was beyond repair. So, my boss got a newer Dell, but I think it was a Vostro (she got a laptop from the business section, not the personal/consumer).

When my old laptop's screen went out last summer, I wound up buying a Dell from the outlet. They have a category for computers that are basically brand new, just designed by someone else - never turned on/opened by the other person. So, I bought a brand new laptop for a couple hundred dollars off. HOWEVER, I have already found out not to cheap out on the service plans - at least get the accident protection. I had to pay $300 for a repair and they had my computer for more than a week. However, I have been happy overall with Dell.

My husband it an IT guy. He sticks to Dell for both clients and personal use. Costco recently had a coupon for Dell's that was fantastic! My mom just got an HP and I'm waiting to see how that works out on the service end.

ASUS - some HP. We checked deals recently and online was no cheaper than Best buy. The good thing about Best Buy is if there's a problem within 30 days you can swap it out with no problem. A bunch of dell models have an issue with the dvd/cd slot.

I'm a IT guy, too. I will only use, recommend, and suggest Dell !!!

I switched a few years ago to a Macbook and love it. Just bought a new one at Christmas when the old one was broken in an accident. It is so, so wonderful not to spend so much time running virus scans, upgrading my virus software, etc. It's just a pretty care-free machine. If you don't need a PC, I'd highly recommend looking at a Mac.

I just bought a new Dell - the old one is still great after nearly 10 years, though it's definitely a lot heavier! Never had any problems with them, and I like being able to customize it online really easily.

OP here. Just bought a Dell online. The ship date is 4/16. Do they ever ship early? Just curious. Thanks.

do not buy in the Dell Studio line. 2 major repairs in the first three months.

I only use Dell !!!

20:38 back--my warning is solely with respect to the Studio line. We have purchased several Dells and they have all worked well. However, this particular product line (Studio laptops) seems cursed. We are not the only ones having problems from what we have heard.

Here's another vote for a Macbook. I bought a refurbished model for a discount!

I vote for the Macbook too! We switched to using Macs recently and I can't imagine life without it!
