How hard is it to get into the instrumental program at Ellington?

Anonymous
Are there equal number of students in each program? If not, anyone know how many applicants typically for instrumental and how many enrolled?

Go to
http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Learn+About+Schools/Lottery+and+Admissions:+Apply+to+Our+Schools and look up Ellington. It shows how many slots in each program, the number filled and the number wait listed. You can judge the size of the incoming classes that way. What it does not tell you is the number of applicants.

I was surprised to see how few students apply.

According to the administration, their applications are down significantly (~20%) due to the construction and hte kids having to travel between two buildings for academics and arts respectively.

Where did you get this number?

The total number of students who applied isn't available, as far as I know, although you might be able to call the school and ask. The weeding process is pretty time-consuming (my child went through it) and includes submitting several recommendations, an audition (with call-backs) or showing of a portfolio, and a family interview. You can read about the application process for each program on their website. The numbers you see at the PP's link show 1) the kids who made it through the application process and were admitted and 2) the kids who made it through but in the end were put on a short waiting list. Not shown are: 3) total number of kids who applied to each program or 4) number of kids who were either turned away at some point during the admissions process or who failed to complete all of the steps.
