DC brought home a paper invitation to the parents for the above. I thought it was just a "Promotion" ceremony. Didn't think FCPS gave any academic awards, esp at the elementary level?
I'm sure it does differ from school to school, but I'm a little curious as to what awards they give out... |
| My son got an award for CML last year (came in first in his grade at his school). He was in 3rd grade. I also saw awards given for Wordmasters. The Art and PE teachers and the Librarian also gave away awards. |

Our FCPS elementary schools gave out lots of academic awards every quarter and then at the end of the year. I have to admit that I thought all the schools here did this, since we've been at three plus a middle school where kids were regularly honored for academics.

| +1. CML and Wordmasters are big ones, plus there is some presidential academic excellence award - can't remember the actual title. I think in our school 6th grader's are eligible, but it's different everywhere. We came from outside Virginia a few years ago, and my DS received one in 1st grade and one in 2nd grade - based on grades and academic testing like MAP. Not sure what it's based on here as DS is not in 6th grade here yet. |

At my son's school last year, there was a community award given in memory of a former student who had passed away in an accident. They also gave out a Principal's award. In addition, 6 students were given an academic award for getting all 4's/A's from 4th-6th. All students also get a "diploma" and get to hear their name called.
At my school of employment, we give out a Music/Art/PE award. Students who participated in All-County Chorus also get a certificate. I believe they also give out a few other awards for News Show, and a community award. Again, all students get to hear their name called, and get a certificate from the principal. |

In 6th grade, DC received a President's Award for Educational Excellence, others received it for fitness. He received a math award from taking a state wide test. And a few others I can't remember.
