...stupid, pretentious word. Waterboarding to the person who pulled it from their "fancy" lexicon.

Is it the word you hate or the concept? If you had never read this board before and you were investigating independent school for your child, would you not be interested in knowing where the graduates go? For me, it's just one piece of information, along with a lot of other points I would consider. But I certainly do consider it.

Does sound pretensions. Is used elsewhere than DCUM.

it's used all around the county.

Is this question for real? The word or the concept? Anywho... my kid is in an independent school in DC. I repeat, the WORD is stupid and pretentious. If, as PP suggests, the word is used all around the country then those who use all around the country are, well, pretentious. Exmissions indeed.

Corrected my own snarky post.

Well, all I was saying was that of all the words that are routinely posted on this board...exmissions doesn't hit the top of my list for pretentiousness. And frankly, I think it's a little weird to be perseverating on the term.

Ah ha... you made up the word exmissions.

From what I can tell, the only two places that use the word are NYC and Washington. Everyone else uses the word placement.

New voice here.

Yes, stupid stupid word.

Concept totally valuable. Yet the word manages to not capture it effectively, but rather torture and mangle it. In a strangely pretentious way.

Just because you are not familiar with the word doesn't make it stupid or pretentious. I ran a quick search on Google books and found the word in several hundred publications dating back to the 1880s, in such fields as law, medicine, physics, and environmental science. IMHO the word makes perfect sense in the schools context too. If you run a search for "exmission" and "education" or "school" you'll find several references as well.

Wrong, 20:56, "exmission" is not an English word, and certainly not in the context in which it is used on this Board. Exmission is, apparently, a German word. Ironically, the English meaning of this German word is pretty much contrary to the concept of "exmission" used on this Board--it means "ejection" or "expulsion." And I don't think too many people here who ask about a school's "exmissions" are wondering about how many kids get kicked out of a particular school!

"Admission" is the noun form of the verb "admit." Admit derives from Latin. But there is no word "exmit." And there is no such word as exmission. You can't just replace "ex" for "ad" and create a new word. "Placement" is a perfectly sensible word that conveys the precise concept people are looking for. People should use it, and not the fake word exmission.

Eximssion is .... one of the last things on my mind at the moment

"Wrong," 23:25? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the root of exmit or exmission is going to be Latin -- much like exsanguinate, which also is not commonly used (except among some doctors). Here is a search in Google Books that yields over 700 results, some in German or French, but many in English:

http://books.google.com/books?q=exmission+OR+exmit&btnG=Search+Books

I agree that "placement" is the closest synonym (and the only one I can think of), but to me at least, it suggests an action by the school that is not necessarily accurate.

I understand your frustration -- there are words I think are silly and euphemistic too. I'm not telling you you can't hate "exmission" -- feel free. I'm just saying not everyone agrees with you.

Again, 7:20, it's not an English word. Not in the dictionary. Made up. Fake.
