On our walks, there's a yard with herbs planted near the street, growing rather wild, and there's one huge bush of something (rosemary? lavender? sage?) that my dog LOVES to roll in. We discourage rolling because she usually ends up smelling terrible but she smells wonderful after rolling in this and once in a while I can't stop her. Any idea what it could be? I'd like to plant some in my yard. |
Could be anything. Dogs will roll in dead fish and poop.
Can you describe the bush more? |
Describe it. It could be rosemary. |
Not after this winter. |
It could be a recent planting. I don't know how big the plant is of course. But there are some fairly big starter Rosemary plants on sale now. |
I have the same situation going on. I'm certain the plant is in the mint family.
But, the mint family has 100 subspecies and I haven't identified which one. I believe it's an ornamental "cat mint," like this: ![]() |
That photo is Cat Mint -- Napeta -- and is related to Catnip. Your dog may be getting a little buzz from it. |
I love the look of that cat mint. What a cool plant. I don't want to attract kitty cats to my yard, though. |
Catmint. It doesn't attract cats to our yard, but when I was cutting some once a passing cat stopped and had a wonderful time rolling in it. |
I hope you also discourage riling because, well, it's someone's yard and their plant. |
Oh no. I want my dog to destroy other peoples' property and bust up their lanscapes. Excuse me, what the hell response are you expecting to posts like this? Is being a scold something you enjoy? |
Can you post a picture? I'd like to get something like this for my dogs. Better than the stuff they roll in currently ![]() |
That is a nice smell for your dog.![]() It likes full sun and soil on the dry and alkaline side, like the other Mediterranean herbs. |
