DC State Board of Education & their role with DCPS Budgets and Policy?

Anonymous
What does the DC Board of Education do? Are there any published position statements or opinions regarding school policy or Budgets? Is there a Quarterly or Yearly Report on the status of the Schools? What function do they have? Do they have any impact on DCPS decisions?

www.sboe.dc.gov. They mostly oversee education policy and how it relates to national policy requirement - think graduation requirements, teacher qualifications, No Child Left Behind, education standards, that sort of thing. I'm pretty sure they are not involved in discussions involving budget, building improvements, etc..., but rather they focus more on the education policy recommendations, in conjunction with OSSE. I believe implementation (or not) of those recommendations, or any decision to fund a recommendation, is something the Mayor and the Chancellor do. Most of the Board's "power" (or enforcement capability) was removed when the Mayor took control of the schools.

That's good b/c isn't 1 also the CEO of PARCC? I would think that would be a conflict of interest.

They are figurehead with not much real power. Power squarely with the mayor

Joe Weedon is to do whatever CHPSPO tells him to do.

Don't worry. FOCUS and the charter industry plan to run more candidates like Wilson Phelan and Jolly, in 8 wards and at-large. Pretty soon all talk of neighborhood schools will be over at the citylevel.

It lost its power when Fenty got mayoral control of schools.

I have never seen any notices of DC Board of Education (DCBOE) Meetings or request for public input from any DC BOE Members. How do they know what their constituents want them to advocate for? Seems like a social climbing position for the next step. If I am totally wrong please accept my apologies; I know these people are working for free.

It's not all that hard to find information if you are truly interested in the proceedings of a body that is essentially irrelevant to most issues that impact education in DC.
