10,000 dogs slaughtered at Chinese dog eating festival in June

I can't believe how this is happening in a supposedly civilized country http://www.dogingtonpost.com/10000-dogs-tortured-annual-yulin-dog-eating-festival/

Who cares? Millions of pigs are kept in horrific conditions in this country and slaughtered in their millions, and they are much more intelligent than dogs, so why don't you worry about that instead?

I don't support factory farming, either.

And I don't judge the merits of a life form by its intelligence relative to another life form.

At least they are slaughtered to be eaten not just euthanized like the hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, and other pets here in are supposedly civilized country.

Too bad they don't do this to cats.

French eat horses too.

Different countries live differently and eat different foods. I'm sure other cultures think our eating habits are appalling as well.

Think twice before you eat Kung Pao Chi...

Yeah, knowing what I know - I am no the least bit surprised. The feeling of superiority is a self destructive thing, at best.

Are you a vegetarian OP? If not you have no business being horrified--you kill animals every day.

Does "civilized" mean "agrees with what I think"?

Many "civilized" countries would be mortified that you eat cow, or pig. They may or may not find you backward for not eating offal, or pigeon, horse, dog, or various bushmeat.

Food is cultural, not moral from a bigger sense.

Learn a little about the world. If you're truly vegan (not a 5 guys burger eating "vegetarian"), I can understand your offence. But the key is: if you're eat ANY mat, you need to take a step back an think hard about your position, because it sounds like an ignorant one, on the world scale.

Here's the thing: in the U.S., we do not eat dogs. It is not socially acceptable (at best). This is why people here are appalled. IMO, rightfully so. The issue I have is that the Chinese, whenever something culturally sensitive comes to the forefront, they pretend it does not exist. They do not want to be faulted, or seen in a negative light. Is this not irony?

I understand in other places the culture partakes in different behaviors. Here, we do not eat dogs. We are in the U.S., for anyone who is wondering.

Many European countries think the US is uncivilized with all the gun violence, lack of healthcare, and no federally mandated vacation policy.

Then how DO you judge the merits of a life form?

How do you feel about the slaughter of cute furry lambs?
Baby goats?
Calfs?
piglets?

all animals, some just more domesticated than others.
