Graduation gifts?

What's an appropriate gift for a female high school graduate whose one parent is a close friend/work colleague? Not on the high schook scene yet so unsure of what's typical or what that age is into these days.

I always get a bag. I got a niece a nice black backpack that I would wear. I think it was Calvin Klein or something. I was about five years ago. It was her first grown up bag.
