Moving and Center is too far for our daycare

Anonymous
I hope I can get some advice on who to contact or exactly what my options are. My DC was accepted to AAP. We got the letter where we have to choose which option we want (base or center) but the problem is that we recently moved out of the boundaries for our base and center and my DC is supposed to start at a new school next year. The problem is that the center for our new base school is very far west of us and the daycare that we use (they pick up from school) does not pick up from that school. What, if any, are my options? Could I possibly get a transfer for my DC to go the the center he is currently zoned for? I really have no idea who to contact and I don't want to mail the aap acceptance back without knowing where my kid is going to end up next year.

Also, the new base school does have a local AAP but, doesn't strike me as a very good option.

Thoughts?

You can switch daycare providers and have your DC attend the newly assigned Level IV AAP Center or you can opt for the new base school for Local Level IV with the existing daycare provider.

You didn't hear it from me but I heard of someone who had a very similar problem and they didn't report their move. Not sure the exact details of how they did it but I do know they did kiss 'n ride in the am and the daycare pick up in the pm. Guess they didn't have too many at home play dates?

OP here--switching daycare is not an option. I want my kid to have something consistent. Why do they have transfers based on daycare as an option if that isn't something they take into consideration?

Unfortunately I already reported the move to his current school. Wouldn't want to go that route anyway...Im sure it would end poorly, knowing my luck. I guess it really is going to come down to doing local AAP at the new school. Does anyone have any thoughts on local AAP? Is it really just as challenging? What happens if all the students choose to go to the center school and only one or two stay at the base school?

The LLIV programs vary widely (as do the AAP center schools). I would look at how many AAP students stay and how many go to the AAP center school. At our local school 80%? or so stay and it is large and robust.

In order to get the daycare exemption, both schools have to be open to it and it is a one year exemption to be applied annually. How crowded is the old Center school?

I would still ask if your kid can transfer - maybe the center is not overcrowded and they can consider. Most of the kids left our base school to go to the center - only 3 stayed in LLIV. The rest of the class was Level 3 kids that I'm not sure how were selected. Anyway, I heard the teacher was great and pretty much all the kids were happy - especially the part about staying within their neighborhood with the same friends. Some schools have a very strong LLIV and some don't. You should find out more about your new base school's LLIV - might turn out to be a great option for your DC.

^ I meant to say that the 3 kids were happy that they stayed - they didn't want to leave in the first place. Well the rest of the class was happy too I'm sure. Our school has a good LLIV program but the center is more popular because of its name.

OP, of course switching daycare is an option, the most straightforward one. Children are flexible, they can handle change.

He's going into third grade, how much longer will you need daycare anyways?

Also, sending him to the correctly assigned center program based on your new address will help him make neighborhood friends and keep him with kids he knows for middle school.

If you have LLIV at your new base, they are not going to let you switch centers.

This doesn't even make sense to me, of course you sign him up for sacc or find a new daycare center associated with the new center. Call the new center and get a list of which daycares drop off/pick up.

I didn't realize some of the AAP center boundaries were so large.

It sounds like you just prefer the previously-assigned center for other reasons.

Something similar happened at Greenbriar West when I taught there a few years ago. The family moved into another center boundary but didn't tell the school. They were found out and asked to enroll at the correct school.

+1

Especially recommend getting on the SACC list. There are often after-school programs at school and SACC kids are escorted to participate. It's a great way to meet new people and make more friends.

Obviously I prefer the other center for other reasons (his friends are going to be going there, its closer to our new house actually, the bell schedule is better, its on my way to work) but the main reason is that his aftercare program picks up from there and I don't want to pull him out of it. If the aftercare program provided pick up from the new center, I would have no problem with it. Its a karate program that he's been with for 3 year and its great for him. He loves it and the instructors there. If the transfer cant be done, it can't be done and I will just have him do the local IV AAP at the new base school, I was really just curious if transfers based on daycare could be made in a center school situation, that's all. And I wasn't sure who I could contact if so.
