This question matters a lot to us in our school selection process.
Is there any ongoing discussion with parents, beyond the presentation of information, and the 'op-in' vs. 'opt-out' form? |
Depends on what you mean by "ongoing discussion." They certainly don't call us up every day to say what went on in class. It focuses pretty much on puberty and reproduction (5th and 6th grades). At our school, girls and boys are not separated except for a couple of classes. If there's a topic that comes up that the teacher thinks should be discussed at home, he lets us know. I know they're sensitive to the fact that not every kid is going to be heterosexual, and certainly not all parents are. But since they're mainly focusing on topics other than "sex" per se, this does not come up as often as you might think.
My oldest goes to Catholic high school, where the basic theme seems to be chastity and the basic orientation is heterosexual. They don't communicate much with parents--I guess by this point they think you should just ask your child. |
