Looking for a decent-quality bedroom set for an 11 x 16 room without breaking the bank (under $4.5k for a pair of nightstands, a headboard, a dresser, and chest). My style tends toward transitional or even mid-century modern. Furniture needs to be smaller scale to fit the room, but at the same time it needs to fit my clothes. My current set is huge but the drawers are so small and shallow they're worthless.
Any ideas for where to start my search? |
I know some people are really opposed to this, but if you live in the DC area there are just tons of mid-century modern pieces in fabulous condition at estate sales, antique stores, craigslist, etc. And because they are older pieces they are at a smaller scale. I have seen so many pieces that are just fabulous condition, much better quality than much of what you find in stores today. I find myself mentally furnishing a fabulous MCM apartment every time I go to some estate sale with those pieces. |
It may be easier if you look for individual pieces rather than a matching set. |
I'm sorry, but I don't really know enough about design to say what style this is, but I've been looking at this bed because of the storage.

I would def look at crate and barrel...they tend to have great quality for the price and many pieces are 'apartment' sizes/fit well to scale. also check out apartmenttherapy.com
places like west elm and cb2 probably meet your aesthetic but not good enough quality; design (not) within reach is probably not in that pricerange... good luck! |
In what world is 11x16 a small room? |
I typically love Crate and Barrel, but our metal framed bed from there is only 3 years old and squeaks terribly (and not just when it's supposed to squeak!), it sounds like it's going to fall apart when we sit down on the bed (and neither of us is heavier than average). We've tried tightening the bolts, loosening the bolts, it will work for 2 weeks, then back to making noise. |
The West Elm beds are notorious for falling apart - search for "west elm bed" on apartment therapy. |
We got our metal frame bed from Overstock and it has been great. No squeaking, very sturdy, nice look. It is a queen in a 110 sq ft room. The night stands are West Elm. |
I just got an Ethan Allen catalog and they are going way more transitional than they were in the past.Creative Classics in Alexandria also has some very nice transitional pieces and also some that lean mid-century. |
Room & Board |
0 I love Room & Board, but it would be impossible to get the number of pieces OP wants for $4,500 there. |
OP here- thanks for the great suggestions! Time to go looking. Has anyone been to Green Door Furniture? Wondering what kind of stuff they have. |
Costco? |
Crate and Barrel quality is not good. |
