Need a new mattress - advice please

We need a new king-sized mattress. I think our current, 10 year-old mattress is contributing to pain issues both DH and I are suffering from (back and hip).

What is the best mattress to purchase for those who suffer from back/hip pain?
Where is the best place to go to purchase a mattress?
Is it possible to get a good mattress for cheap? We really can't afford one right now but feel that getting a new one may help alleviate some of our pain.

TIA

Read here before you do any shopping:

Based on his recommendations, we bought a king-size St. Regis mattress/box spring set from Charles P. Rogers (online). It is fantastic. So happy with it.

He is right that ten minutes testing out mattresses at a store will not yield a better outcome than buying online based on solid information.

Believe it or not, Walmart Spa Sensations mattresses are very inexpensive and have great reviews. We bought the twin mattresses for our kids' rooms and love them so much that we just got a queen for ourselves.

Even if you hate it after 5 years, it would be worth it. ($259 for a king beats a $3k tempurpedic any day of the week.)

Absolutely try a natural latex mattress. My husband and I are both heavy with bad backs and we LOVE LOVE LOVE ours. It makes me feel 10 years younger.

Savvy Rest in Vienna has a showroom where you can try lots of different combos of latex firmness to customize your own mattress. It's all organic - no off-gassing, no bad smells. And they last 20 years.
