Tipping at a day spa

Anonymous
For a birthday present, my sister is treating me to a deluxe one hour manicure and a deluxe one hour pedicure at a local spa. I don't know what the treatments would cost--what would be an appropriate tip for 2 hours of spa treatments? Thanks in advance, this is a very nice treat for me that I wouldn't be able to indulge in on my own! TIA!

My guess would be about $40-$50 depending on how high-end it is. Tip for a 2-hour treatment at the Mandarin Oriental is around $60-$70.

I find that an hour of spa time is usually around $100 and generally tip 20%. Sigh. Not a lot of spa time in my life.

It's "supposed" to be 20% but that's outrageous given the spa prices.. if you're a regular, you have to consider around that range.. but i'll write this down- if it's somewhere where my mani was short or not that great or not going back- i'm not doing 20%- that's crazy if it's such a short service or not good..

the spa may have their prices posted online where you could find out.
I would tip 15% of the price.

An exmaple of something similar would be at the Red Door Spa, the Pomegranate Lime Manicure is 40 minutes and the Pedicure is 50 min. Total cost for the 2 of these would be $120. I would probably tip $20 for the 2 services.

Does anyone know-- do the service providers at day spas make the majority of their salary from tips? I didn't think it was like restaurant wait-staff, where they are only making a couple of dollars an hour and almost completely reliant on tips. That might make a difference on how I view this. Just curious.

Because this is a gift that requires you (by custom) to tip (between 15 and 20 percent of price) it is okay (rather than rude) for you to ask the spa what those services cost (or just grab their price list/brochure on the way in) so you can calculate the tip. Another option is to ask the receptionist/cashier folks to tell you what 15 percent of each service would be. Or go on the spa's website and look up the prices. Or call before you go.

OP here, thanks for all the responses, I checked out the prices online and will tip 15-20%. Thanks for taking the time to help me out!
