Dilemma, younger sibling not waitlisted...

but enrolled in older siblings current school. Older sibling has a great wl# for our top choice, but younger sibling wasn't waitlisted because he was match with older siblings school.

Are we SOL? As an OOB family, does the younger sibling loose it's preference if we enroll the older sibling at our top choice? We didn't think we would get such a great wl# for our top choice and decided to rank our current DC child school as the #1 pick for our youngest child. BIG MISTAKE.

Yeah that's the drawback to sibling preference you have to rank #1. Your only option would be to not accept in school one, enroll older in new school and his sibling would be moved to WL behind any other siblings waiting to get in. If you disclose the school and grade, some may be able to provide insight on chances of WL moving.

If I were you, I'd call My School DC now to ask what is possible. Since you were matched somewhere you don't get to enter the 2nd round, right? (And maybe that already happened?).

The school is MV for K. Under 10 waiting list #. In order to enroll for the second round I would need to unenroll the younger sibling from the current school and this may leave us scrambling later.

Do it!!!!! Worst case they are in different schools for a year and your youngest gets in for pk4.

Come on OP, this is a great opportunity!

This. Don't lose MV.

I'm really confused as to why you put a school first that wasn't your first choice.

Having said that, I thought there was some kind of policy that kids were kept on the waiting list at any school where a sibling was matched. So, if your oldest gets into MV, then your younger would go back on the WL and jump up to the spot on the bottom behind any wait listed little sibs, but before other kids. Call My School DC to check.

This is assuming that MV was on the younger's original list.

So OP, are you saying that for your younger child, you did not actually rank in order of preference?

I would call the MSDC hotline and see what options, if any, you have.

The youngest isn't waitlisted because the child was matched with a higher ranked school.

Correct,

1 choice # Current siblings school - matched
2nd choice # MV - not waitlisted
3rd choice - stokes

Right, the younger child presumably had a number at MV but then "lost" it when he was ranked. Is that right? In that case, I think he gets to go back on the waiting list when his sibling was matched. But I don't remember where I read that.

Keep in mind that if this is for pre-K-3 but this may be a very difficult year to get in for a younger sibling. That being said all younger siblings are already in place in pre-K3 at MV . So if you want to try your luck and see if a space will come open in the two that were available for kids who are not siblings then you should do it. Worst case scenario if you're older kid gets in and you wait the year and join in pre-Kayfour if that is the grade that you would need. It might be worth it. Great school. Good luck!

If your younger child was matched in round 1, then you cannot submit an application in round 2. You'd have to apply post-lottery, and then if your older child gets a spot then and enrolls, your younger child would move to the top of the waitlist.

Why didn't you rank MV as #1 for your youngest and your oldest's current school as #2?

For sibling preference you have to rank older sibling's school #1 which elliminates you from being on WL at any other school. Rightfully so. If you know you want to get into the sibling's school you should rank #1. If you were having doubts, you should have ranked schools for #2 in true preference (and not used your sibling preference). That way sibling #2 will get fair shot at WLs and worst case would get bumped to the top of the sibling WL after the lottery if #1 stays enrolled. Just like DCI, you have to rank it #2 to guarantee you get a spot (if coming from a feeder). If you would prefer Latin over DCI, you would not use the feeder preference and rank Latin #1 and DCI #2.

What school is the oldest in? What grade? Are they already in a spanish program? Are you concerned with that? We have close friends that really struggled with Spanish from a non-immersion charter transition to MV and they are currently kicking themselves for leaving and can't get back in #1.
