Looking for a therapist for 13 yr old DD

Anonymous
Please recommend a therapist in the Vienna/Fairfax area for a 13 yr old DD. She wants a female and evening appointment. Our insurance covers the cost if in-plan. We have United Healthcare.

Please respond. She has told me that she needs to talk to a therapist as she is very sad and in a fog. Thanks.

I don't have recommendations but perhaps you can delve further into what is bothering her. Why outsource and just parent?

Not the OP but shut up.

Poster 9:35 again. Could you contact your daughters medical doctor or even one of your own for a suggestion.

Go to your insurance website and check the provider section, it's harder to find a therapist who takes insurance and they often switch companies. The best, most up to date info is on that website.

Also you can search psychology today for someone who takes United.

Find out if she is thinking about hurting herself, usually when kids ask to see someone they are feeling desperate. Call the school counselor and pediatrician to get guidance.

Please so this quickly.

OP here. Yes, this is what I have done. I know which ones take United and am now calling Ped for guidance. DD has told me that she has thoughts of suicide. I'm very scared. I don't think she will harm herself. But she said she really needs to talk to someone, aside from me.

OP--It may be almost impossible to find a therapist with your insurance who is taking new patients.

Please scrimp elsewhere in your budget to pay out of pocket if need be for your daughter.

Also, you may have to go to several therapists before you find one that works. And no, this is not easier than it sounds, and it's expensive too--many charge more for an initial assessment. But therapy is not going to be effective if it's not a good match and/or the therapist isn't really equipped to deal with your DD's issues.

I have a DD who has been in and out of therapy for close to six years, and I feel like we just found the right therapist this year.

If money is an issue or if anything happens to heighten your concern, you can get your child admitted to a psych ward because she is a danger to herself. You go in through ER typically. The ward stay will be paid by insurance and they will not let them leave without first lining up an outpatient therapist who takes your insurance.

Yes, also not the OP, but double shut up.

Thanks! I realized this and have calls in to different groups in the area. I can figure out the price. DDs health is most important.

She is in Springfield, but try Lisa Gordon (703) 921-0692

Big hugs OP. You are great for finding the help your child needs. And kudos to her for speaking up. That is so so hard. I wish you the best.
