I called mine:
Memaw Granddaddy (Southern) DH called his: Grandma Poppa our baby is only 6 months so we are not there yet but the subject of my parents' and my in-laws' grandparent names recently came up and so I was just curious what everyone else calls their grandparents or what your kids call their grandparents? |

Oma Opa They were German immigrants who came here c 1925 when they were teenagers. Dad's side Grandma Grandpa |
my siblings, cousins, and I call one set of grandparents: "M" (for 'Mom') and "D" (for 'Dad') because that's what our parents always called them
the other set of grandparents is Swedish and we call them the Swedish farfar (father's father) and farmar (father's mother) |
my grandmother: Macy (her actual name)
my grandfather: Papa my kids call my Dad: Pop and my mom: Mimi (not sure how that came about, exactly) |
Nana and Bebo
Gramma and Grampa |
Nona, my Italian grandmother
Bibba, my southern grandmother (her real name is Elizabeth but everyone, friends, children, grandchildren, calls her Bibba |
Mom's side is Nana and Pop-Pop
Dad's side is Grandma and Grandad. We did the same when I was a kid -- Nana was mom's mom and Grandma was dad's mom. I didn't have grandfathers since both died long before I was born. |
All of my grandparents were deceased by the time I was born. My parents referred to them by name when sharing stories. My children refer to their grandparents (only one side, and they have both passed on as well) as MawMaw and PawPaw. |
my GM: Lovie
my GP: G my MIL: Goo (I seriously have no idea where my nephew got this but it's what he's always called her) my FIL: Papa my Dad: Grumpah (chosen because he's a grump) my Mom: Gramma K |
Is your child the first grandchild OP? Usually the first grandchild sets the names. That is great news if your child is the first ![]() |
My grandparents were:
Nan & paddy Nana & poppop My sons call my parents omi & pa My in-laws are Mimi & grandpa mike |
I called my grandparents, on both sides Grandma and Grandpa with first names.
|
Me: Grandma & Grandpa Lastname (both sides)
Spouse: Granny & Pawpaw Lastname (both sides) Our kids: Grandma & Grandpa; Nana & Pawpaw |
I called one side Oma and Opa and my other grandmother was Grandma (grandfather on that side died before I was born). DH called one Grammy (grandfather was dead) and the other side Grammy first name and Pop-pop.
Our kids call my parents Oma and Opa and DH's parents Ya-ya and Pop. My Mil picked Yaya because she didn't want to be called anything too grandmotherly sounding. Yaya is Greek-but no one in their family is Greek. |
