I am buying my first house soon. I want to slowly transition from the hand-me-down furniture I currently own to higher quality items. I want to take my time, really understand my personal tastes, needs, etc before I purchase an item. And, for now, I just don't have the resources to spend a lot of money.
That being said, I will need some items immediately. I don't want to spend a lot but I also don't want to look like the an ikea catalog. Any suggestions on how/where to buy some "for the time-being" pieces? |
Craigslist! We have one of the best craigslists in the country. I find amazing pieces on there. Really unique ones I wouldn't be able to find in stores. |
I agree with Craigslist - I have gotten awesome items from there. Beautiful, great stuff from rich people who are selling it for a steal.
Check if there is a Facebook group in your area too, i've done well there too. |
If you can take a Tuesday, go to the Weschler's Tuesday auction. Or another local auction or estate sale. You can usually pick up good pieces for cheap there. |
I agree with the earlier posters that suggested craigslist. If you are done with the item and it's still in good shape you can resell it on craigslist too. For accessories, I would suggest Target of all places ![]() |
I've never been, but have friends who rave about this:

Sorry, not sure why that link was weird. It's the Crumpton auction: http://www.crumptonauctions.com/ |
Homegoods, World Market, Overstock, Home Decorators, Target |
+1 And Craigslist for fantastic deals on quality furniture. |
Does anyone else worry about things like bed bugs with Craig's list furniture? |
I worry about bedbugs and making transactions with potentially creepy listers. I guess I am just paranoid. That being said, Homegoods is a great place to get some 'for-the-time-being' pieces. |
