In the 40s you were told to hate the "Japs".
In the 50s you had to (and I mean HAD to) hate the communists. In the 60s we tried to believe we loved everyone (but we didn't). In the 70s it was the communists again, but you didn't have to hate them. You didn't get locked up if you liked them. In the 80s it was drug dealers. Mr. Bennett told us to. In the 90s it was pedophiles, kill um. In the new millennium it was Arabs. Now we hate so many people. Please tell me who I should hate. |
| Anyone can tell you who to hate, but it's ultimately your choice if you do or not. |

I don’t recall anyone telling me to “hate” any of these groups.
I do recall people talking about the need to follow our Constitution, abide by the law, and arrest those who break the law. And, I recall people talking about defending our country so those who do not agree with our way of life do not take over. I do also recall being told to love thy neighbors as thyself and to forgive those who transgress against us. There is no room in this world for “hate.” |
| Treating people as collectives, as members of groups different from your own group, is what allows this type of division and then the hate. |
+1000 Whatever happened to “United we stand?” Instead, the need is to partition people into special groups and emphasize the differences. |
| I don't hate people or groups of people. But I damn straight hate evil, and the world is full of it now. |

No single or unified force told us to hate these groups. There were significant events and movements surrounding many of them, but no one commanded hate (except in the case of McCarthyism, but that was more of a misguided, enforced disassociation).
I think it's a bit odd to mix things like racial groups with felons in this list. It implies being Arab is commuting an offense, which is an offense in itself. It also seems that if you think were ALL being COMMANDED to hate these people and things that you're consuming a lot of conservative or fundamentalist or alarmist media. Is that the case? So to answer your questions, no, I don't allow simple bigots to tell me who to hate. |
