And people applying to those schools take their children to private testers.
The WPPSI is for children age 2 years 6 months to 7 years 3 months. In general, the longer you wait to have such a test done, the more information you can get. On this particular test, some subtests are only done for children aged 4 and over, so earlier testing doesn't give that information. (Of course, many people have to have their children tested earlier than 4 in order to apply to schools.)
Also, other IQ tests are available for children from age 6 or so, and children that age are much more likely to be compliant with the tester. As a result, later test might provide more insight into how individual children's brains work.
