Power Line Blog story about Harry Reid apparently false

Some time ago a story spread that Harry Reid's facial injuries were a result of a fight with his brother. A Las Vegas man is reporting that he made up the story to see if he could fool right wing blogs into running it. He succeeded in getting the Power Line blog to run his story:

http://lasvegassun.com/news/2015/apr/26/big-lie-las-vegan-watches-his-reid-tale-takes/

Once the story appeared on Power Line, it spread throughout the Internet. It was even reported on DCUM as fact:

http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/30/459299.page#6739431

The follow-up posts to that post are worth reading in retrospect as a bunch of posters pontificate about how this (false) story demonstrates a pattern of dishonesty on Reid's part.

I have repeatedly criticized the right wing puke funnel in which blogs run rumors which then make their way to more serious press. The guy who made up the story told those to whom he pitched it that he was using a fake name. None of them bothered to confirm his identity or collaborate the story. He even ended up as a guest on Laura Ingraham’s radio show.

Like so much that comes out of the puke funnel, the Reid story will probably never die. It will be interesting to see how many times in the future the it will reappear.

These days, even reporters from reputable media outlets (never mind Power Line) often don't bother to retract their errors. If they do retract, the damage is still done. Journalism is a very different animal than it used to be.

I really like the term "right wing puke tunnel."

FWIW, I believed Reid's story, given my mother hurt herself pretty badly on a treadmill. Glenn Beck said it was entirely possible that the band broke and he spun and got that kind of injury - he didn't doubt his story. He was a bit confused at the part about Reid saying he was exercising in his bathroom, as it's not really big enough to do so, but Beck felt Reid was being honest.

I do believe Reid is a snake. I believe he is shady. I believe his lies about Romney were beyond reproach. But this is one thing I not only think he told the truth about, but I felt for him, given my Mom.

If you don't believe there is a left wing puke funnel, I suggest you look at Rolling Stone and UVA, as well as the horrible way the left wing media treated the Duke Lacrosse players.

However I think it is essentially a non-story given no one was really hurt by it, not like Romney, those lacrosse boys, and the boys at that frat house.

Well stated. I agree he is a snake. A bitter one.

That's not true at all. The left wing media published quite a few stories about how the prosecutor's story didn't line up. WaPo, NYT, the Raleigh newspaper.

It did not take a while.

And if you want to call Jezebel the left wing puke funnel, fine. But we have tons of legitimate news outlets that do their job.

What conservative media is NOT part of the right wing puke funnel?

Just FYI, Mother Jones is a nonprofit media outlet run by the Foundation for National Progress. It is in a different category than for-profit outlets like the Washington Post.

The left denigrates any source that doesn't support their point of view. Case in point this thread

And it took long enough so that the reputation of the boy and the frat was trashed. That is too long

When a "source" runs a story based on nothing but the word of someone who admits to using a false name and doesn't bother with the least bit of collaboration, the source deserves to be denigrated. I assume that you consider it to be top flight reporting?

OK Mr Right Wing Puke Tunnel. Seems to me it's those mainstream papers that go silent every time the truth comes out. See Brown as a good example

For example? Pick a topic, and let's see whether the mainstream papers go silent. I think you are full of shit.

When the Rolling Stone rape article turned out to be false, there where hundreds of articles criticizing it. The Columbia School of Journalism was asked to conduct a full scale investigation into the article. If this is silence, for once the silence truly is deafening. As for Michael Brown, again I am not sure how you define "silent", but Michael Brown's entire life history was publicized. I am not sure what more you could expect from the press.

But, as to the topic of this thread, are you truly standing by a publication that knowingly publishes a story on nothing more than the word of someone who admits to using a false name? Are you seriously going to just ignore that and try to make this about other media (and wrongly at that)?
