I don't usually have seasonal allergies but I think I've got them this year. I tried taking Zyrtec for two days in a row and while it alleviated the symptoms (scratchy and sore throat, runny nose) it is also an antihistamine and made me feel really groggy. Like to the point that I was driving with my kids on the Beltway at 2:00 yesterday and could barely keep my eyes open (which scared the heck out of me) and went home and took a nap.
What about Claritin-- does it have similar side effects? Or something else? I'm heading to CVS this morning. Thank you! |
| Zyrtec made us sleepy and cranky. We take Claritan. |
| Flonase is great - but it takes about a week of use to really work. I also take Zyrtec and use eye drops. |
|
Claritin doesn't seem to do anything for me, positive or negative.
Allegra works great, powerful and no side effects. |

I like Claritin (no side effects), but it is not as strong as the others in combating symptoms. This year, I tried starting it early and keeping consistent with taking it daily, and it has really helped.
Also, I use antihistamine eye drops every day (during this season). I would rather use Claritin and eye drops than any of the other treatments (and I've tried a lot). |
| Zyrtec is the only thing that works on my. I was on Claritin for a while, but it become ineffective. I've heard the body can build up a resistance, so I would keep that in mind when selecting one (or two). |
| Zyrtec (or the Costco version- Allertec) is the only allergy med that works for me. I have to take it in the evening before I go to bed. |
| I take Claritin. My husband prefers Allegra. I think you need to try a few and find out which one works for your body and the allergies you have. |
| Same problem with Zyrtec - it makes me unsafe of the roads. I switched to taking it before bed - I'm groggy in the early morning - until 10 am but not nearly as bad if I took it first thing in the morning. The doctors also suggested reducing the amount I was taking or try the kids version. Unfortunately it was really making my blood pressure reach the roof so I stopped taking it. Now its eye drops and flonase - start early with both in February so when the allergies start hitting you have it under control. This combination works best for me with a neti pot to help clear out sinus when I'm sneezy. |
| Antronex. it's a holistic medicine that simply helps process histamine efficiently and not supresses its production |
|
Allegra taken at night. I have high blood pressure so I take the plain Allegra not the -D version. It seems to be working ok for now.
DH takes the kids version of Claritin. LOL he likes the grape chewables. No complaints from him yet. |
| I like Zyrtec but it makes me feel like OP. I could fall asleep mid-sentence. I have also tried Xyzal (it's like Zyrtec). It makes me less sleepy but more lazy and out of it. Claritin makes me too dry. Flonase -works for me. Veramyst -works. I like Allegra too (no sleepiness). |

allergra all day with nasonex 2 times per day
The best thing is a sinus rinse kit. Get the Neli-med and use boiled or distilled water with 2 packets of the saline powder. It brings me so much relief. If the 2 packets sting, use one. |
| *allegra all day means that is what I use one time per day. I am excited about it because I switched from zyrtec and it really helps. |
|
Zyrtec at night. If you take it during the day, you feel stupid. I couldn't string sentences together.
Claritin is great, but it stopped working for me. Allegra gave me crazy, intense dreams. I was worried I wasn't sleeping well so I stopped. Couldn't do nasonex or flonase. Can't stand it dripping down my throat from my nose. |
