If cost is not a major consideration, would you just buy the Vitamix for a 20-something moving into a new apartment (and suggested a blender when asked what he wanted) who is a big fan of green veggie and other smoothies? Or is there another brand?

Yes. If cost is no issue get the new counter-depth one, which is smaller in height and quieter. I love our Vitamix and use it all the time.
