Summer opportunities for a 13 year old girl - help please!

Anonymous
We are looking for good summer options for a bright 13-year-old girls. She does not want to go back to the sleep-away camp she's gone to in years past, and seems to prefer to stay at home. But we are worried that she will be bored out of her mind (and we might go nuts, too) if she's just hanging around the house all summer. Does anyone have thoughts on good ways for a 13-year-old to be occupied over the summer? Great camps for kids that age? CIT programs? Volunteer opportunities? She is smart and outgoing and creative (great singer) and moderately athletic, but she doesn't seem to have any bright ideas herself.

thanks!

If I were 13, and was OK with going to Portland, and my folks could swing it, I would want to go here:

PP here. Strike that. I didn't realize it was a day program. Sorry.

How about being a CIT at Levine or other music camp? You could also check out Adventure Theatre or Imagination Stage, which both have musical theatre camps. I'm in Chevy Chase, so am familiar with these, but I'm sure there are other similar programs throughout the area.

Not to worry, pp. There will be one in DC this summer, too. I'm hoping my dd will go.

Discovery Creek camp takes young volunteers. My daugther did it a couple of years ago (the summer after 8th grade I think) and it was a good experience.

If she is interested in working, she could be a mother's helper to make some money. I did that while I was in middle/high school in the summers.

I love the idea of letting middle/high school student become 'helpers.' How better to get a taste of real grown-up life?
Earning $ is not bad either.

A lot of local day camps offer programs for 13-14 year olds. Others take kids that age as counselors in training.

I think the American Red Cross has some kind of summer program for teen voluneters, where they learn first aid, help in food banks, and do a range of other stuff....

If she's into music, singing, acting etc, check out the Apprentice program at Levine School of Music's Music and Arts Day Camp. She'll work with excellent teachers, other teens like her and campers who really do enjoy music, acting (up and around!). And she'll earn community service hours! She can do full or half days. More info at www.levineschool.org/campteen

I dont know where exactly you live, but arlington county parks and rec has volunteering opportunities in some of their summer camps. I worked in a camp for elementary kids with special needs last summer and had anywhere from 1-3 volunteers assisting us each session. Its a great chance to build up experience for a job later.
