If you live in Dupont 20036, what are the public preschool and elementary school options?

I see the School without Walls @ Francis Stevens listed on the DCPS site. How is the school? Is it difficult to get a space in Prek (and does that start at 3)? My son will be 3 in July and we are seriously thinking of moving here so would truly appreciate your feedback and help! We are moving from an outer suburb to be near work and improve quality of life and time together - very excited to be back in the city!

School Without Walls is an entrance exam high school. Look up Ross Elementary.

But SWW@FS is an elementary school, just as the OP noted.

Also, PK3 or 4 is not guaranteed to anyone. Only k-12 is guaranteed for your in-bounds school. Entrance into PK3 and PK4 is done by a lottery that just occurred.

It SWWFS has a pk3 Waitlist of 100+ including many that are IB. Try again in K when you can walk in!

OP can enter the round 2 lottery & jump to the end of the IB wait list, can't she?

OP here - thank you - when is the Round 2 lottery for Prek? Do any of you have kids at SWWFS? How do you like it?

OP again - if you're not in public preK - where do you send your kids to daycare in Dupont? We are thinking of moving quickly on an apartment but I haven't done research or visits to local schools yet so feedback so helpful. Thanks!! (lLove our MoCo daycare and if we can't get a spot in Dupont I would actually drive him there - it's near other family who could pick him up, but obviously not ideal to have to do that so hope to get a Dupont place for him!)

I would move IB for Ross. Amongst the best scores in the city, higher than some WOTP and great close knit community.

PP - the apartment we want is JUST OOB for Ross. Like a few blocks. School is top priority though so if Francis Stevens is not a good option we will likely hold off and wait for another place. Need to research!

School for Friends is a daycare in Dupont that I have heard good things about. Also the JCC. Not sure if they have long waitlists or not. I think the JCC is much closer to Ross.

There are only 2 IB pk3 on the SWWFS wait list. OP, go to myschooldc and follow the instructions; you can do more research afterwards. SWWFS is the next big thing.

We sent our child to the preschool room at Huckleberry Cheesecake on 19th Street just south of DuPont Circle. It was wonderful.

You should definitely apply through www.myschooldc.org
Good luck!

SWW@FS is a great choice for PK3 and into the lower elementary grades - I've heard the upper elementary grades are solid as well but don't know folks in those grades personally. OP, you will likely be happy there through the next couple of years if not longer.

There are a number of private preschools/daycares in the neighborhood, and most of them have spots in their 3s rooms because so many kids head to public preschool at 3.
