We just bought a house and know that we will need a lot of new things since this house has more rooms than our current house.
Would you buy a few things so you have them when you move in or wait until you're in before deciding what to buy? What kind of things would you get in advance of moving into your new house? |
Refinish floors if needed. |
Refinish floors, paint any rooms that need painting. As long as you have your basic furniture (a bed to sleep in, a table to eat at, etc) I would just wait to get new furniture once you are in the house. |
I would focus on painting, refinishing floors, cleaning, hanging blinds, and handiman type work before moving in. Set up shelving, hang shower curtains, hang curtains or window treatments, etc.
I would not focus on buying furniture. As long as you have a table to eat at, beds to sleep on, and chairs to sit on, you should be fine to live there while you figure out how to decorate. |
Agree with all the above. Do the messy stuff, first. Don't buy furniture until you move in and furnish it gradually as you figure out what works for your arrangement and style. |
Don't agree with repainting unless the walls are truly in an unliveable state. Better to live in the rooms a while first and see how the light works with your furnishings and then repaint. I'd rather find the furniture I like and then match the paint than the other way around. |
Unless you plan to paint everything white or off white. Then it doesn't matter, does it? |
Take the opportunity to put in shelf liner. |
Why? |
Change out the toilet seats. |
Um, because that makes the shelves nice? I would never move to a new place and not put in shelf liner and new toilet seats. |
