Dormer windows

We have dormer windows and they currently have fake wood blinds that do not keep out light. Toddler needs blackout shades or won't go to sleep on time. We had blackout curtains in our old house but can't put them up here or they'll cover up half the window even when open. Should we replace the blinds or use something like outside mount roman shades over them? Any suggestions for something that isn't going to cost me $200+? I feel ridiculous spending that much on a kid's room!

I already have a good place where we got our main floor shades from, so I could use them, but again -- $200+ is a lot!!
