my 4yo was enthralled by the kid laptops at target yesterday....got me to thinking that we should look into buying one. does anyone have a kid's computer or laptop system that they like? she was looking at the vtech and leapad products yesterday....

kids need swing sets, bikes, pools...

computers are for boring adults.

My 4 year old loves using my MacBook--buy yourself one and share it occasionally.

op here: well, i don't think i can get her a swingset or a pool for here in my dupont neighborhood. good suggestion though.

I think the kids laptops are too pricey. I'd rather spend the same on a cheap adult laptop and get a few kid friendly games.

I've seen some of the leapster handheld games (run about $50 or so, plus $25 for each game) and for what people are paying, the graphics are HORRIBLE.

Likewise with the kid laptops. Too much (cost) for too little (quality).

DCs have been on our computers since they were 3. They enjoy typing the letters and watching it appear on screen. Then I had them hooked on a geographic puzzle game; and they quickly learned the states, European and African countries. Sometimes I let them play with my design programs where they can make shapes, colors, etc. They know how to navigate PCs and Mac interfaces...its so amazing to watch them.

But they also bike, swim, paint, draw, garden, build, read etc...

Agreed. Early exposure to computers is almost a necessity today. Not saying they should be surfing and wasting their days....but you want them to know how they work. Just like learning another language early. It helps it become something they intuitively understand.

and let them get fat!

Computer time isn't fattening if DC bikes to the park before he does his autocad-lego program or mathblasters while eating a bowl of grapes.

eating chips while watching tv starts with eating grapes while using the computer...

the brain doesn't know the difference.

I guess a glass of wine when they are 21 will send them down that road to crackhead as well!

don't talk about what you don't know smart mamma..

the brain links the "computer activity" with the eating action.

no matter what is in the screen or what is in the bowl.

googling port while eating chips is the same thing for the brain as eating grapes while playing with auto-cad.

Some of you folks are ridiculous. Reducing a little tv or computer time to a lifetime of bad habits, etc.

I'm in the everything in moderating camp. Why not just get yourself a laptop and let your kid tap away at it with you?

I knew exactly what you were referring to and still disagree. Computers don't magically make grape eaters into chip eaters.
