Contemporary fiction with some economy of words?

Anonymous
I'm crawling out from my rock and want to enjoy some nonfiction. I'm looking for something that's not loaded with tons of sideshows and detailed minutia. It doesn't need to be can't-put-it-down fast-paced (although I did enjoy Gone Girl in 2 sittings) and I do enjoy books with good relationships among the characters. I forced myself to read Big Little Lies and was glad I finished it but I'd say it's not my style of fiction--just too much windup. Any suggested books or authors?

Not sure exactly what you mean, but I think these books are written in pretty plain language:

The Housekeeper and the Professor
Plainsong
Station Eleven
Anonymous
Everything I Never Told You
The Expats

If you like contemporary spy books or thrillers:

Red Sparrow
Golden Hour
I Am Pilgrim
