ISO: Flea and Tick meds recommendations

Anonymous
New dog owner here. I'm overwhelmed by the info about Frontline's reduced effectiveness and the generics available. Can you point me to your preferred brand and best place to buy it for the price? We go on hikes a couple times a month at least. Thanks!!

I don't have any problems with Frontline.

According to our vet, Frontline is increasingly ineffective as fleas & ticks are developing resistance to it. Our dog had been on it for years and despite that, was having flea problems last summer.

We switched to Nexgard:

It is far preferable to me because it is ingestible (so not applying it on fur, worrying about touching it, etc.) and according to our vet and what I've read online, is more effective than Frontline. (It is made by the same company.)

PP here: We get it from the above website. Your vet has to prescribe it.

We buy K9 Avantix.

We used k9 advantix until I tried to cheap out and bought frontline at Costco. Major mistake. We got a terrible flea infestation.

We have used this twice and each time my dog throws up. We are giving it one more chance and having him take directly after a meal but if he gets sick again, I have to assume there is something wrong with this drug.

Can you get Revolution for dogs? We use it on our cats and it works extremely well, for a whole month at a time (though it is expensive).

PP here. We give it to our dog with a big meal (i.e. we add grilled chicken & rice to her dog food for that meal). So far she has not thrown up or become ill.

To be clear, I am not crazy about giving her any form of this drug, ingestible, topical, or otherwise. They are toxic drugs. OTOH, Lyme disease is a real threat and so are fleas. So it is a choice from among evils.

Frontline works fine on my dogs.

We have hadn't any flea issues. During tick season (quite long here in DC/MD/VA), we have to use it once a month. Ticks are everywhere around here. Pulled one off of her last week. Applied the meds, and haven't seen any since. That includes two walks in a wooded area.

Also use Frontline with no adverse effects or infestations.

Whatever you do, don't buy over the counter!!! The Hartz stuff gave my two dogs seizures! It was a very scary night for all of us and they barely made it.

Is there something just for ticks? We've never had fleas and I don't want to overmedicate my dog

I'd be interested too. I think killing fleas is a bonus of most tick applications.

I had not heard about problems with Frontline. We've never had a problem with it and it's more effective than anything else I've ever tried.
