What do I wear to HS graduation?

Anonymous
This is the college forum, but I figure most people here have been or are about to attend a HS graduation. My oldest is graduating in June. Outdoors, weather permitting. I am +50, average height, about 20 pounds overweight, and look awful in dresses because I have heavy legs and cankles. Can I get away with nice slacks and a sweater? Or do I need a jacket with slacks? Or should I just get a dress? Thanks!

Been to a lot of these recently. Most people just wore work wear (so yes, slacks and a shirt). A lot of guys wore a sports jacket, but few wore a suit.

Our HS graduation was last year, in June, indoors. I saw everything from jeans to dresses. I wore khaki's with brown strappy heels and a white blouse. It was perfect, causal enough since it was pretty warm and had to walk a little from parking, but dressy enough for the event.

One of my kids went to a private school where the students were very dressed up (no cap and gown) and the families were generally in garden party wear - dresses for women and mostly khakis and blue blazers for men. The other went to a big public school and graduation was downtown on a super hot day and it was much more varied - casual to semi dressy.

No reason you cant wear pants but the dressiness of them will depend a bit on the culture of the school.

Country club casual for kids and one notch up from that for adults.

Definitely not jeans. A nice sundress, capris and a nice top is always appropriate. Some schools get more decked out than others but jeans? Come on....

My child goes to private. Graduation is tuxes for the boys, formalish dresses for the girls. Parents and guests will wear suits, nice dresses. Pants are fine as long as they are very dressy at my child's school. No jeans, no khakis.
