I know this general question has been asked numerous times already, but none of the older threads really answered my specific questions. This is my first experience with this process so I apologize if my questions seem silly.
1) DD is currently a sophomore who just took a "mock" ACT. It was the real ACT from a few years ago. Her score was abysmal to say the least. She is an above average student, but not GT. So will not be applying to universities that have very competitive admissions. 2) She wants to start test prep now, which I am in favor of. And she needs a tutor, vs. self paced. I don't have the time or desire to stay on top of her to make sure she's studying on her own. I read in on of the older posts that if your DC is not headed for an IVY or is not in a GT program, then you don't really need to spend the $$ for places like Prep Matters or Capital Educators....and that a Princeton Review tutor is what you really need. TIA |
If DD has good grades and just poor scores then there are plenty of test optional colleges that are available. If DD needs a decent ACT score to bring up grades then probably want to increase emphasis on testing. As you said good student but not GT then look for 5 match colleges that are test optional and see if you can find a home without the test before getting too nervous |
Was your daughter's written portion counted into the total? My DC has SN issues and cannot write well. We were given the advice to focus on the ACT not the SAT because the SAT (then and for the immediate future) has the required written portion. We had DD privately coached for ten sessions before the ACT and she stomped it with a 32 composite - - but the written portioni was not good at all. Fortunately, only the math and English portions are reported so she placed well in a University. |
Good question PP! I'll have to take a look. your DC's score was terrific ![]() where did you find your private tutor? |
You may want to reconsider Prep Matters. Both of my daughters improved ACT test scores with tutors, who were well matched to their personalities, study styles and areas of challenge. Increased skills, confidence and test taking strategies were just what they needed. Worth every penny! |
Thanks, I know they are very highly rated. And if it will help my DD raise her score considerably, we would of course pay the hefty price. The things we parents do! Thanks again ![]() |
