Hi, we are moving to DC from London and my son will be starting Pre-K in August. In London he has private swimming lessons and loves them and I'd like to continue them in DC. Where are the recommended pools, and where can I find a good swimming teacher/school?
Thanks in advance! |
| Where will you be living? Each jurisdiction has different pools, rec centers and rules. |
| Thanks. We're not totally sure (that's another question!) but looking in Silver Spring, Chevy Chase, the area in DC just below Silver Spring (Shepherd Park?) or maybe Georgetown. |
| Anthony Bowen YMCA on W Street NW. |
| The JCC has lessons and they're affordable. |
This family is moving from London they don't know what "JCC" means. Nor do I. |
Jewish Community Center. If you google JCC it will be the first thing to come up. (Other than Jefferson Community College.) OP, the county or city where you live will likely offer swim classes. Once you know where you live put in the town name and google "parks and recreation." Most areas will have a YMCA. (That stands for Young Men's Christian Association. But most people know it as YMCA or the Y.) They offer swim classes too. There's also a classes forum on this site that might yield you some more suggestions, but it will help if you know where you're going to live. |

I'm in LA and if I google JCC I get the Westside Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles.
Googling shows preference for your immediate vicinity, so if she googled JCC in London I have no idea what she'd get but not the place you're talking about. |
| Lowell School in Shepherd Park. |
Well, this is dcurbanmoms. Presumption is you are in dc. |
| Kids First swim school in North Bethesda is good. They have a very warm pool, which puts kids at ease. It's close to Silver Spring. They have private and group lessons. We had privates with the manager and she was excellent. |
Really, even when the OP actually said we are in LONDON and coming to DC in JUNE? |
| Kids First is a chain with several area locations. We go to the one on Rockville Pike and my son enjoys it -- especially the warmth and smaller size of the pool. He does group lessons (though usually with only 1 or 2 other kids) but they offer private lessons, too. |
| There is also the YMCA on Old Georgetown Rd in Bethesda (indoor and outdoor) and Sport and Health Club in Bethesda (indoor). And many more outdoor pools are options over the summer. |
