Moving from UK - Preschool places

Anonymous
We are moving to DC from the UK in June. What are the chances of finding a preschool place for our (just) 2 year old to start in September? Ideally I am looking for just a couple of mornings a week - is that likely to be possible? The preschools here in the UK vary but most allow this sort of arrangement.

We will be living either in Georgetown or Spring Valley and our older children will be attending BSW. Before I start looking in earnest I'm just wondering if this will be an impossible task. I have heard that the waitlists are long.

Yes this is possible but not a PT morning only. But enroll early since you are also mixing in with the summer camp programs. Start early an enroll now.

You may find yourself in luck as there are always changes towards the end of summer with moving etc.

Call Chevy Chase Presbyterian - they may have space.

Well you really should have had your application in a couple of months ago. Now there are waitlists but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask for the admissions directors -- there may be last minute withdrawals. In Georgetown there is Little Folks, NCRC is a short drive away, River School is near Spring Valley. There is also a Spring Valley Montessori that is a bit less competitive admissions-wise though also a great preschool. Another that I don't know as much about is Georgetown Montessori - less competitive as well. Many preschools offer 2-3 half-day options.

We haven't looked in a while but when we did it seemed like most preschools started at 2.5 or 3.

I thought BSW started taking 2 year olds? We were there a few years back, but they've had a sign up for quite a while about this.

Thank you. BSW does take 2 year olds but only five mornings a week.

Westmoreland Children's Center has a 2 day per week program for 2-year-olds. Not sure if there are spots, but it would be worth calling.

I'm this PP. If you speak with BSW, you'll probably find they can be flexible with number of days. There is some precedent with that.

You could try this place - some British people we know liked it (they were not Jewish, so that's not a requirement) - I think it's not full time:

Washington Hebrew Congregation’s Edlavitch-Tyser Early Childhood

But generally over here it's either daycare or full time preschool. Franklin Montessori in Van Ness has a 2 year old program. It's worth calling places even though their deadlines have passed. Also, there is a co-op preschool in the area - I don't know too much about it, but there may be something on here if you search.
