I see this recommended and/or discussed often. Do all the public schools have access to this? Most of the privates? Is this something that can be used/purchased outside of a school system?
Those of you that have used it, did you find it helpful and/or necessary? Thanks. |
MCPS provides access to it. It is based on results for a particular school (not the population of all applicants) so is most useful when the school does a good job of capturing the admission results of students. Our school did a good job of that, and kids applied to a wide variety of schools so there was a lot of useful data there. What it doesn't show is recruited athletes, legacy or other hooks but when my DC sat down with the admissions counselor she was able to give him a little more background on the schools he was interested in (e.g., many of the lower stat accepted kids at one school were faculty kids).
I don't think you can get access to naviance outside of a school, and if you could it would be pretty generic data. The useful thing about Naviance is that it shows how kids from your school fared in admissions. |
In FCPS, and agree with everything 13:40 said.
The only thing I didn't like about Naviance is that the scattergrams of admitted students are based on SAT scores and weighted GPAs through senior year. If your child is taking challenging courses as a senior, then there's a good chance his/her final GPA will be higher than his/her GPA through junior year, so the Naviance data can serve to discourage kids from applying to "reaches." And that's OK with some guidance counselors, because they think that everyone wants to get into schools, rather than get turned down. Subject to that, it's a useful tool and, at times, eye opening. You can see how applicants from a particular school tend to enjoy disproportionate success (often at OOS flagships and some privates) and disproportionate rejections (typically at some state schools). |
Naviance uses self-reported data. |
I wonder if that varies by jurisdiction or by school. From what I can tell, the information that our FCPS HS makes available is based on complete data (and the college acceptances section is only updated when the college or university, not the kid, has informed the school of an admissions decision). |
It is hard to work for a private school because there are not enough kids to assure anonymity so then you can't look at the data. It works for larger schools. I found it very helpful. At first, to give my DC an outside resource to compare colleges- then to use to see if he would be a likely admit. It isn't perfect, but it is informational. You can also see how a many applied, of those how many were accepted and of those how many attended. In FCPS, you can go to the career counselor and she can bring up the countywide statistics for those schools that have too few applicant to provide info. |
In MCPS the GPA and SAT data was from school records. The self reported part was acceptances, WL, rejections, but my impression was that the kids were quite honest about hat - no reason not to be. I think they had to report results before the school would send the final transcript to their enrolled school. |
Problem is kids are more honest (and willing to report) about reporting acceptance but less so about WL and rejections. |
Our FFX county school sends kids to such a narrow range of schools the info doesn't exist or is inhelpful for most colleges. |
Un helpful. Sorry |
The information I've seen from our FCPS school suggests either the high schools get the information from the colleges and universities, or the kids are self-reporting honestly. There's nothing that on its face suggests kids are under-reporting WL and rejections. |
Our MCPS seems to get good info from the kids as well. Many of the WL kids meet with their counselors to go over their options/strategies so are certainly sharing their results honestly. At least at DCs schools the kids all shared their results with each other too. |
I'm in MCPS too. Kids talk about results but not sure if they actually log in and update the data. DC updated for accepts but not sure about rejects/WLs. |
There is no way colleges are reporting to the high schools who was admitted/ rejected. I think that Info comesfrom the student. |
This is how it's done at my DC's school, too. |
