Sand and stain or paint?

| We recently purchased a home and the front door (exterior side) is stained high gloss and the interior side is painted. Ideally, I'd like to strip the paint and stain and start over. Is it worth the effort or should I paint the door or both sides? Can I paint over a high gloss stain without it chipping or peeling? Anyone have experience with this DIY project? Of if done professionally, how much does it cost to strip and stain with door in place? TIA! |

No lead paint. The house was built in the 20's and the door is less than 20 years old. |
