...really sucks. But it only sucks because daycare/private is so expensive, and DC residents have become conditioned to the expectation that we'll receive it as a government entitlement. There ar estill more seats offered than taken, it's just that the excess is in Ward 7, (i.e. more than halfway to Tysons).
We're all getting in for K. We just need to buck up until then. |
Thanks, Ward 3 poster.
|
| Is K-12 a government entitlement also? What about police, fire and sanitation service? |
No, but PK3 and PK4 are one of the few areas that DC is out ahead of surrounding jurisdictions and the nation in general. If you can't make the PK3/PK4 rules for you...just stand down and wait until K. |
| PK3/4 has helped DC retain high income (and tax-paying families). The city should make the program more accessible due to its popularity. |
It was created for low income residents. To help the kids get school ready. It is/was a better option than head start. And most truly high SES don't even stress about PS lottery. We just keep our kids in private and move along. |
| Um no, eotr is east for most of us and Tysons is west so ward 7 is not more than halfway to Tysons. Now for someone in ward 7, your home in foxhall might be halfway to Tysons. |
This post is so out of touch I don't even know where to start. |
| Some counties like prince William are cutting K to half day. In DC we are lucky to have some pk3 and pk4 options - I bet that there are spots people just need to be willing to travel or go to "less desirable" schools. |
+1 the empathy that many of us are feeling for waitlisted and shut out families is quickly being eroded. I'm starting to have things like "stop your whining!" Run through my head when I see these threads. PS3 and PK are not required grades and your child's access to them is not guaranteed. It's that simple. |
Yeah, but data demonstrate they bolt as a group soon thereafter (and some a little before). Also, the actual high income people in DC -- not just "higher than welfare" -- have the kids at stand-alone preschool 2-3, often for 4s. |
|
"shut out" in first round doesn't mean shut out. We didn't get in anywhere at first, but did off the waitlist (with numbers in the 80s). I didn't apply to any wotp or cap hll schools--all eotp dcps or charters.

Where do you live that Ward 7 (on the far Eastern corner of the triangle) is 1/2 way to Tysons, which is West of the city? |
It seems popular with people in so-called gentrifying areas and/or can't afford private school options. The truly high-income people ie. Ward 3 don't seem to participate at similar rates as the rest of the population. Look at the popularity of charters with certain types of whites. |
She lives in Ward 9. |
