I am about to leave a federal Court of Appeals clerkship to go to a big law firm as a Senior Associate in Litigation and I am kinda worried. A bit more about me: 3.5 years in big law before leaving for District clerkship and then COA clerkship back to back. Coming in as 6th year in a couple of months and firm kept emphasizing case management experience in interview.
Having missed out on much of the development midlevels are supposed to get, I am a bit worried that I will not meet expectations. I am also having trouble finding resources to update my knowledge because what senior associates do varies so much from firm to firm and even within firms. I have friends in big law who are doing doc review as 7th years, while others are second-chairing trials. I am actually not worried about the actual work (ex: drafting briefs, taking/defending depositions, trials), but I have no idea what managing a case looks like as a Senior Associate. If a partner called me into his office the day after a complaint was filed and asked me to manage all the deadlines/assign work to Juniors, I am not sure I would know what to do. Can anyone who is or has been a Senior Associate or is familiar with what the ideal Senior Associate is like speak to this? TIA. |
