Cambridge Mass family trip report

Anonymous
Enjoyed a brief stay in Cambridge/Boston with our 8 and 6 year olds, visiting relatives, and had a couple recs to pass on for families.
Harvard Museum of Natural History has an amazing collection of rocks and crystals as well as the stuffed and mounted animal collection, dinosaur and other fossils and the anthropological exhibits at the Peabody. It looks very old timey with wooden cases like something from an Indiana Jones movie. A good stop with kids and a manageable size, if the Museum of Science seems like too big of a commitment. Another highlight with the kids was the USS Constitution, the ship and small visitors' center are right on the harbor in Charleston and near some playground parks. We did not hit the museum which is operated separately.
If you want to stay in a walkable area near Harvard the Irving House was a good fit for us. They had some limited off street parking, family friendly rooms with a Q and either a twin and trundle or bunk beds, scrambled eggs, hot cheesy popovers and scones and continental items in the breakfast room + fruit, cake and coffee all day and a fridge that guests may use. There are beautiful historic homes in the surrounding neighborhood.
The Full Moon cafe in west Cambridge on Huron was great, kids menu, a spacious train table and toy area and the beer selection and adult food (steak + argula salad) was good too. The kids can play while you catch up with friends. S&S in Cambridge does not have a kids menu but there is a huge menu to pick from including deli items. They said they have chicken fingers "off menu."
Legal Seafoods was a reliable kid friendly stop for lunch or dinner (nice fish tank, kids menu) while walking around MIT.
We walked into the "infinite food court" and Fanueil Hall and the kids went crazy, there is such a huge variety of takeout and ice cream vendors. It is a bit hectic and crowded so come mentally prepared.
