help! pain meds = constipation

Anonymous
I'm on prescription pain meds for throwing out my back. I forgot about the constipation that comes with them.

I can't take it. What can I do/take for some relief? Still softener? Laxative? Natural foods? I'm dying.

Get off the narcs asap and use Advil, Alleve, or Tylenol.
if you must be on them, take as many stool softeners as it takes, as well as daily Miralax with plenty of water.

Percoset stopped me up after my c-section. I took alot of colace to get things moving. Pretty awful experience though.

They make these dark chocolate covered prunes that I feed to my ds to keep him regular. They're called "Plumsweets", in a purple package. You might find them helpful to snack on!

I am in a similar situation due to major injuries from a car accident (pain meds are for PT/OT). I have found that Colase works well and prune juice too. Everyone's body is different - I hope you find something that works well for you.

Enema. They aren't actually unpleasant....much better than being constipated.

PP here - also drink a lot of water as it really helps to stay hydrated.

Colace and mini wheats.

Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) causes condtipation too. They're usually prescribed together for back issues.

Ask your doctor if you can try Tramadol instead. It often works as well as the stronger stuff but is less likely to cause constipation.

Start taking colace daily while on the pain meds.

Take a dose of miralax today and drink a couple glasses of prune juice.

I wish to god someone had told me about Miralax before I had kids. I had three C-sections and after the first one didn't know there were options other than prunes, etc. Now, when I have to take a narcotic, it's Miralax for me.

Miralax or ask the doctor for some Colace. Completely common/ expected side effect.

Miralax, prunes (but I really like prunes).

Magnesium powder called Calm. You can take 1 tbl a few times a day if needed. It will make you go.
