We have a mix of carpets, rugs, hardwood, tile, and linoleum; 3 stories; small house (not much space to store it). Any suggestion?

Dyson animal complete. We have a small house, rugs over hardwood, and large shedding dogs. Works well for us.

Oreck--nice and light for carrying up and down stairs

Central vacs are a pain. Hate dealing with the long hose.

Never ever worth the cost and hassle.

After having a series of expensive vacuums that died right after the warranty expired, I went to Walmart and bought a cheap Bissel Upright for $39. It has been one of the best vacuums I've ever had and the best choice for the money. It lasted 6 years before it lost suction (probably a broken seal somewhere). So I went right back to Walmart and bought a replacement (now $43) and if I even get a year out of it I get my money's worth.

I have two -- Bissell Cleanview bought from Macy's 6 years ago for $79 and a Miele Delphi bought recently for about $400. They both serve different purposes -- I love that the brush turns off on the Miele so as not to damage softer wood floors and since it's a canister, it's so easy to use on steps. It's also great for upholstery. That said, the Bissell has held up amazingly well and is great for wall to wall carpeting and less delicate area rugs -- plus, every time we replace the filters, it's like a brand new vacuum.

Did you try replacing the filter? When ours lost suction, it was back to normal after replacing the filters (there were 3)

I love our Miele Blue Star, but probably all Mieles are great!! It's 7 years old and works like new, bags are a little pricey but so worth it!

+1, we finally replaced ours after 15+ years and the new one is even lighter. I don't like how it doesn't have the option to raise the roller brush though (and I couldn't find ANY vacuum with this feature this time) but I do like it!

I cleaned and replaced both filters, checked for obstructions, and changed the bag out three times just in case I had a bad batch. It was time to call it. There's only so much effort I can give to a $39 vacuum.
