There is word going around Brent elementary that a child will receive additional preference if an older sibling is already enrolled as apposed to a new Kindergarten student just starting out and an additional sibling starting at PK3. Appears to be a grey area of confirming sibling preference when the lottery results come out as apposed to pending sibling preference to those siblings that will have a Kindergartner who has not been fully enrolled in the school. Seems Principal Young is misinformed of DCPS regulations or there is another loophole in the system that pits an individual school against DCPS rules and the child is the ultimate loser in the situation.
Anyone else familiar with this issue? |
That is absolutely ridiculous. There should be no additional preference given. Call DCPS central office to confirm. |
|
I thought you only got sibling preference if your sibling was actually attending at the time of the lottery.
In the Charter school world, siblings of kids who are already enrolled. Siblings of kids who are admitted through the lottery get bumped to the top of the waiting list, under students who were admitted through the lottery, including any non-siblings. |

I would call My School DC and ask. And central office.
I suspect this is just a rumor that will be quashed right away. |
| I thought that already enrolled sibling had preference over sibling who will start in the following year under the normal hierarchy. This is why having a twin who just got into a school via lottery is not the same as having an older sib already enrolled. But you could probably call the lottery hotline to confirm. But I definitely don't think this is a Brent-specific policy. |
| The rising K student is not yet a student at the school, so how can sibling preference be assigned? There is no record of the K student being enrolled. How does the school know that you truly will be attending the school come August? |
DCPS has been contacted and they informed that Principle Young is wrong and is providing erroneous information to current parents. What they will do about this is unsure. |
Not a surprise, once again here we go with that Principal. |
| Is there really 42 siblings applying for PK3 for 30 spots? Next Friday will be ugly. |
| Brent should have just done away with PS3 and added a PK. If you can't accommodate all (or at least most) IB demand, then just take away the expectation of PS3 as an option so and allow everyone to start together the following year. PK and PS3 are NOT required grades and no school in upper NW offers PS3. |
I amend that just a bit...I think Hyde-Addison added PS3 this year. |
I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor is true and the school follows this additional sibling preference regardless of what central office says. |
| Watch that waitlist with him! |
But this is how it has always been at all schools! "Enrolled" gets preference over "admitted." Why is this even a thread? |
Glad things are on a level playing field in your world. |
