We have a meeting set with our DCPS about trying to get a 504 for our ADHD kid. Kid was diagnosed after long evaluation that included teacher forms. The teacher now appears to be backing away from some of the things she wrote on the form and we are trying to figure out if she is trying to get out of more work or what. But we expect (perhaps we are unjustifiably skeptical) this to be a difficult conversation with a lot of pushback from the school. Our psychologist is doing a lot of play therapy to address some of the areas of difficulty that she sees and she believes our kid should have a 504 in place for next year (1st grade) when things get more intense and in place by the start of the year in an effort to give our kid confidence and a better start to the year.
any advice on how to prepare for the 504 meeting, how to respectfully advocate for our kid, and also maybe ideas on what to include in the 504? Kid was diagnosed ADHD, combined. |

Think of things you want them to do for him. A few suggestions:
-wiggle cushion or standing desk -preferential seating -help with homework organization -breaks if needed |
|
If executive functioning is an issue, you might want to ask for weekly/biweekly organization check-ins, direct instruction of study skills.
You may need to ask for modified/repeated instructions, assignments broken down into steps/stages, use of a private desk or quiet space. The school itself may have an interest in giving your DC accomodations related to testing (this being PARCC season): small group or quiet room, extended time, breaks, and so forth. Good luck, OP. You might want to read up on the Wrightslaw website for info on 504s and IEPs, especially if you have some more specific psychoeducation data. (I found the discussion about interpreting scores on that site to be immensely helpful.) We're on this journey, too, and there are a lot of bumps and detours, starts and stops. But it does get better. |
| Where are you in the process? Is this the eligibility meeting or the meeting to develop the actual plan? Also, what grade? |
I basically wrote the draft plan for the school officials, based on recommendations in the neuropsych report, and discussed at the meeting. They formalized it with a few other recommendations we agreed upon. I suggest, since you know your child and are familiar with recommendations from the psychologist, and they don't, use the report to guide the school in developing the best plan. They actually appreciated the guidance. |
Eligibility meeting and it is to have something in place for 1st grade for the fall. |
| this is good info. thanks everyone. |

| OP here - just wanted to update you and thank you for the ideas, especially the one to come in with a draft plan. The meeting went well and we really felt like everyone was on the page and eager to help our kid. Thanks all. |
| Thanks for the update, OP! With all the BS we have to go through with our kids and schools, it's great to read a story with a positive outcome. |
