Can someone please tell me WHY all the media refer to the President of the US as Mr. Obama or Mr. Bush or Mr. Clinton, etc? I've noticed this more and more over the last few years. When I was growing up it was always Mr. President or President Carter, etc., never Mr. (insert lastname). It really really bothers me. I know I'm old school and still refer to the Green Book - why does the media feel it necessary to change? |
Speaking of using the wrong address...
What really bugged me during the campaign was referring to Obama as "Senator Obama" and Clinton as "Mrs. Clinton". They were both senators and I saw no reason for the distinction. (And I supported Obama) |
In print, when first referring to a president, youstate a person's title. Second reference or after? You can say Mr. Obama. |

Miss Manners weighs in. |
Ditto. Worse was when people referred to her as Hillary. I wouldn't have voted for her in a million years, but she WAS a sitting U.S. Senator, and it bugged me that folks didn't respect the office enough to use the title. |
True, but addressing someone and referring to him are two different things. |
What's the Green Book? |
The Green Book is officially titled the Social Directory of Washington. |
Does it include protocol for visiting heads of state? If so, can you send a few copies to the White House? |
