I was disappointed to only see a few high schools participating in the DCIAA Cheerleading competition, but with the Charter sector booming in DC, this may be a good idea. When my DD attend Deal last year, there were very few schools who had a softball team. Those who had teams often forfeit or had players who participated in other sports. Expanding to Charters may open up the playing field and allow sports to be more competitive.
Congrats to the Wilson Tigers for becoming the DCIAA 2105 Cheerleading Advanced Division Champions. Thoughts? |
| I think it's only certain sports where they don't compete against each other. My DD runs track for a charter and we see DCPS at the meets all the time. Not many Charter HS are large enough to have sports teams. Our charter actually loses students to DCPS so they can play a particular sport and possibly be seen by potential colleges. |

Banneker, although it's a DCPS allows their students to play certain sports at other DCPS.

Other schools are having the opposite experience. http://grantland.com/features/aazaar-abdul-rahim-rise-new-washington-dc-football-power-friendship-collegiate-academy/ |
| I remember hearing David Catania say last year that if and when the charters finally figure out how to participate meaningfully in high school sports,it will be a serious blow to DCPS. |
That's a DCPS rule: if your school doesn't offer a sport you can play it at another school that does. |
| Why would someone attend a HS that doesn't offer sports? |
Are you serious? Why would someone attend a HS that doesn't offer Latin? Or poetry club? Or drill team? |
Why would someone attend a HS with gang issues? Why would someone attend a school with crumbling facilities? Why would someone attend a school with hoity-toity parents? Why would someone attend a school far away from public transportation? Why would someone attend a school without a gay-straight alliance? Why, why, why . . . ? |
Don't make me laugh. |
Why would someone attend a HS that doesn't offer languages. My child can take 100 different sports programs city-wide. |
pretty sure this can't happen in DC. Foreign language instruction is mandatory |
| It feels like DCPS is "afraid" of Charter Sports programs. They don't want them competing against their students. The won't even let Charter schools use their outdoor facilities most times. It really is too bad. |
If the DCPS is using their own facility, how can the charters also use them? During football, basketball, baseball and track season, the kids practice everyday right after school. |
I was referring to times the facilities are not being used. They were/are not being used everyday from 3-7pm. The point is, even when/if they are not using them, they don't allow the Charters to use them. |
