| I was shocked at how long my child will be on the bus. From what neighbors have said, it's 30-40 minutes. Is this unusual? |
| It depends. Where are you? |
| 35-45 minutes, in San Francisco. |
Why are you answering a question about va schools? |
| About 15 minutes, but the bus gets Em to school half an hour before school starts. This is a FCPS middle school. |
| 30+ minutes. We live 1.5 miles from the HS. They can walk faster. Unfortunately, it is dark and there are no sidewalks, so they take the bus in the am and walk home in the afternoon. |

My 8th grader's bus ride is about 30 minutes. Bus comes at 6:40, they go to the HS first and then the MS. They drop off at the MS around 7:10. We are one of the first stops though.
My ES kid's ride is slightly shorter. Gets on on the bus at 7:55 and gets off at 8:10. But we are one of the last stops on that route. |
| 35-45 minutes |
If that "shocks" you....guess what...my 3rd grader's ride is 50 min. Not including the 10 min. of getting to the bus from the classroom. He doesn't ride the bus home b/c it gets to our drop off point an hour after the end of school bell rings. B/c of that I drive to pick him up every day. Btw, we live 13 min. drive time from the school (center school). |
My DD has graduated now, but this was her experience in middle and high school as well. I ended up shifting my schedule a bit so that I could take her to school myself most days. School started so early it seemed ridiculous for her to get up even earlier just to sit and wait. |
| 40 minutes to MS. |
| 30 minutes to HS. |

OP here. Wow, thank you for the replies. I had no idea. We didn't have a long bus ride to ES, and I just hadn't thought it would be so much different for MS and HS. Driving DC doesn't seem like a great option because we have younger ones at home too.
How do your kids feel about the long rides? What do they do? Can they do homework at least? Or sleep? |
| We walk, but have a neighbor whose child goes to a special deaf center classroom. They fight with transportation every year about the length of the bus ride. Last year they tried to schedule a 1.5 hour each way ride, with stops at two schools. |
I know, right? I guess Jeff has the most awesome forum that even non locals seem the need to post. lol. |
