We are planning a trip to a resort in Jamaica. It's all inclusive, and we don't plan on any exotic side trips or "adventurous" eating. DC are 1 and 4. Should we bother getting the CDC-recommended typhoid vaccine? It is $90 a piece and insurance does not cover it.
TIA. |
| Um, no. |
| We didn't have to get the Typhoid vaccine for Jamaica. (Although we did, and have, for Thailand) |
| I can see how this seems unnecessary, but I'd err on the side of caution for my kids. I'd get the shots. |
| I think chicamonga disease is more of a threat. and the no-see-ums would also be a bigger worry. |
|
I haven't ever done the Typhoid vaccine for travel to a tropical country -- been taking both kids to SE Asia since they were infants.
It's up to you, but not strictly necessary in your case, sounds like. Ask your doctor if you're not sure. |
| I'm weighing the same question for Nicaragua. |
| I've been to Jamaica twice now with my kids (and my brother and his kids), and none of us have ever gotten a typhoid shot. |
| Looks like the side effects are very mild, and the disease is pretty scary (1% of people who get it and are treated will die). I'd say go for it. |
| I got it for Asia, but I figured the CDC knew what it was talking about, and I'd rather not be worried about that particular disease if and when I got sick. I would get it for all family members unless you have strong reasons not to. |

CDC Website (which it looks like you referred to, since you said "adventurous" eating) says:
You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Jamaica. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater. I would not since you are staying at an all-inclusive. But as another PP said, check with your pediatrician about your kids. |
| I would. You don't know the health status of the person preparing your meals. |
| You should ask the pediatrician. |
| Look at CDC website...but an all inclusive, probably not. |
| The typhoid vaccine can only be administered to children over 2 years old. |
