We like coastal look for our living room and need some interior design help. We desperately need a new couch for our living room and one that can sit more than 2 people at a time and is practical with 2 young kids. We can do chaise but we live in a row house so space is narrow so nothing bulky. We also need a paint color for the room. We bought this rug, thoughts on color and type of couch and paint color that would go well with this navy and white stripe rug? (we bought the navy, not royal blue) thanks!

I would think an ivory colored sofa would look great.
check out Lauren leiss's blog if you like coastal/traditional look. Also, it tends to be a bit more modern but westelm is having a sofa sale that ends today. I love my sofa from them. |
How about this?

Get a khaki sofa- slipcovers look good in a coastal home and are practical with young children. Then your striped rug, white walls ( dove white- ben moore). Hang up some large photos in navy frames, add a washed/distressed wood coffee table and then some navy and white throw pillows. Then to give it a little more interest, introduce one more color here and there- such as red, orange, green, robins egg blue (more pillows, a couple of vases or planters, etc). Coastal is easy- but don't overdo it because you are far from the coast(maybe a starfish or two, but that's about it). |

Who are you? I have seen your posts come up on this forum and am amazed at the thought through and thorough suggestions you give posters with questions like this, It's as though someone says navy and whited striped rug and coastal and a whole room pops up in your head and you generously share that vision. So nice to have you on the board! |
I have a navy and off-white colored rug, too. I have an oatmeal colored sofa, and a charcoal armchair. We're still working on artwork, but are incorporating the blue and gray into that plus some orange and the curtains are navy and orange patterned. The orange is not for everyone, but I think it looks great! |
Thank you! You are correct, I do get a picture in my head and go from there. I'm in technology but my real passion is home design ![]() |
OP here-OMG, this is awesome and so helpful, what a talent you have! Thank you so much! |
Sure- I was thinking about your narrow space. There are a lot of cool looking wood benches out there that could act as your coffee table. Also, one more thing to add at one end of the room- a couple of covered wicker storage bins (one for blankets and one for toys). Wicker is another coastal element. |
