telescope for 8 yo

I want to buy a telescope as a birthday gift.
Can anybody knowledgeable and helpful give me some advice or shortcuts to save me some research?
I guess we want something that it is not too delicate, and powerful enough given the light pollution of our area (McLean).
Thinking about spending $150. There are plenty on amazon for this price range.
I guess that a telescope that allows you to buy add-ons in the future might be a good idea too.
